Coffee Bean Roasting: Discover the Secrets of Multiple Flavors

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world, and the most important component is the coffee bean. However, few people know that the flavor and taste of coffee beans depend on how and to what extent they are roasted. In this article, we will explore the secrets behind the various flavors.

1. Coffee bean roasting process

Coffee bean roasting is a delicate and complex process. First, the green coffee beans are pre-processed by washing, peeling, and fermentation. Then, they are dried at a specific temperature to reduce the moisture content and make them easier to preserve.

Next comes the actual roasting process. This stage requires the green beans to be placed in a high temperature environment and heated for a period of time. During this process, the original color edge darkens and gradually turns into dark brown or black.

Different types and varieties of coffee require different degrees and times of roasting. Generally speaking, lightly roasted coffee beans retain more of the original flavor and acidity, while dark roasting produces a stronger taste and bitterness.

2. Light roast

Light roasts are roasted to a temperature between 350°F (175°C) and 400°F (205°C) for about 10 to 12 minutes. This roast retains a high moisture content and is medium brown in color.

Light roasts often produce a bright and fresh taste, with sharp, complex, tart flavors. This style is suitable for those who like light, floral, and citrus flavors.

3. Medium/Medium City or American

Medium/Medium City or Americano is when the beans are heated to between 410°F (210°C) and 428°F (220°C) for about 12 to 14 minutes. At this point, the beans turn a dark brown color and begin to show oils.

Medium roasted coffee beans have higher acidity and some bitterness, but also bring more sweetness and richness to the mouth. This style is suitable for those who like a balanced taste and mixed fruit, chocolate or nutty flavors.

4. Medium dark/French roast

Medium-dark/French roast refers to coffee beans that are heated to between 437°F (225°C) and 446°F (230°C) for about 14 to 16 minutes. At this temperature, the beans become very oily and close to black in color.

A medium-dark roast produces a rich, powerful flavor with noticeable bitterness and low acidity. This style is suitable for those who like rich, cocoa or spice flavors with a slightly sweet aftertaste.

5. Depth/Italy or Spain

Dark/Italian or Spanish refers to heating the beans to over 446°F (230°C) for about 16 to 18 minutes. At this point, the beans become very dark and have a rich oily texture.

Dark roasting produces an extremely rich and bitter taste, often with notes of caramel or toast. This style is suitable for those who like strong, rich and bitter flavors.

6. Conclusion

Through different degrees and methods of roasting, coffee beans can show a variety of flavor characteristics. From bright and fresh to rich and bitter, each style has its own unique charm.

Therefore, when choosing coffee, please choose according to your own taste and flavor preferences, and try different types and varieties of coffee beans to discover more surprises!
