Should coffee beans be refrigerated?

Coffee beans are a must-have for many people every morning, but there are many controversies about how to store coffee beans. One of the controversial points is whether coffee beans should be refrigerated. Below we will explore this issue from several aspects.

First, some people believe that refrigerating coffee beans can extend their shelf life. They believe that the low temperature environment can prevent oxygen and moisture from entering the bag, thereby slowing down the deterioration of the coffee beans. In addition, refrigeration can also help maintain the freshness and flavor of the coffee beans. However, this view is not entirely correct.

In fact, in some professional fields, such as roasters and tasters, a consensus has been reached: it is not recommended to store unopened coffee packages in the refrigerator or freezer. There are two reasons for this: first, storage in a low temperature environment will cause moisture to condense inside the bag and may make the package damp; second, reheating after taking it out may cause moisture to escape and damage the originally fragrant coffee beans.

To sum up, we can conclude that unopened coffee packages should not be refrigerated. Instead, they should be stored in a dry, cool place away from direct sunlight. For opened coffee packages, some measures need to be taken to maintain their freshness and flavor, such as using sealed containers or vacuum bags to store them and placing them at room temperature.
