Generally speaking, most adults have a good tolerance for caffeine. However, as people age, their metabolism may decline, so people who could sleep well after drinking a few cups of coffee when they were young may have trouble sleeping after drinking a cup of coffee when they are old. So, should the elderly avoid drinking coffee? Wang Peining, a neurologist at Taipei Veterans General Hospital, believes that age is not the main factor in stopping drinking coffee, but whether the person has the habit of drinking coffee on a daily basis. If the person already has the habit of drinking coffee on a daily basis, there is no need to stop even at an advanced age. A survey by Brown University in the United States showed that middle-aged and elderly people who drink less than one cup of coffee a day may stimulate nerves and cause blood vessel blockage and stroke if they drink coffee as soon as they get up in the morning. The risk is 6 times higher than that of ordinary people. However, for people who drink coffee regularly (drink 4 cups of coffee a day), the risk of stroke will not increase.
