Does coffee affect high blood pressure?

The main ingredient in coffee that affects blood pressure is caffeine. The effects of caffeine on the human body vary depending on the concentration and total amount consumed.

Coffee of moderate concentration and amount can excite the human brain, invigorate the spirit and relieve fatigue; it also has a weaker effect of stimulating the heart and diuresis. Coffee contains a high content of polyphenol compounds, which are powerful antioxidants. They can delay the oxidation time of low-density lipoprotein by up to three times and have a certain cardiovascular protective effect. However, if the dose is increased, caffeine will directly excite the respiratory center and vasomotor center, deepen and accelerate breathing, and increase blood pressure. Drinking alcohol in large quantities and for a long time can easily induce arteriosclerosis and aggravate hypertension. Therefore, patients with hypertension should quit drinking.

2. Do not drink strong tea

Hypertensive patients should avoid drinking strong tea, especially strong black tea, because black tea contains the highest amount of theophylline, which can cause brain excitement, restlessness, insomnia, palpitations and other discomforts, thereby increasing blood pressure. Drinking light green tea is beneficial to the treatment of hypertension.

3. Do not eat dog meat

Although there are many causes of hypertension, most of them are due to Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity. Dog meat warms the kidney and helps Yang, which can aggravate the condition of Yin deficiency and Yang hyperactivity type hypertension. Other types of hypertension may be caused by kidney Yang deficiency, disturbance of virtual Yang, internal accumulation of phlegm and fire, blood stasis blocking the collaterals, etc. Eating dog meat may agitate the floating Yang or aggravate phlegm and fire or help fire dry blood, which is not conducive to the condition and should not be eaten.

4. Avoid too much salt

The main component of table salt is sodium chloride, and sodium retention can cause an increase in extracellular fluid, increased cardiac output, and increased blood pressure. Therefore, patients with hypertension should limit their salt intake.

5. Avoid spicy and delicate foods

Spicy and refined foods can make stools dry and difficult to pass, which can easily lead to constipation. When patients defecate, abdominal pressure increases, blood pressure rises suddenly, and cerebral hemorrhage is induced. Therefore, spicy and refined foods are prohibited for patients with hypertension.
