Coffee lovers can make their coffee taste sweeter simply by switching to a different colour, a study has found. Scientists say blue or transparent coffee cups, popular in some coffee shops, can reduce the bitterness of coffee without adding sugar.

White is the bitterest and blue is the sweetest

The researchers, from Federation University in Australia and Oxford University in the UK, set out to prove the claim after a barista claimed that white cups made coffee taste more bitter. They found 36 volunteers to take part in the experiment and then used blue, white and transparent coffee cups to verify the claim.

In one experiment, volunteers thought a white coffee cup "enhanced" the taste of coffee more than a transparent cup, according to a study published in the journal Flavour.

In the second experiment that followed, the volunteers felt that the coffee in the blue and transparent cups tasted sweeter than that in the white cup. Among the two types of coffee cups, the volunteers felt that the coffee in the blue cup was sweeter than the coffee in the transparent cup.
