In 30 years, there may be no coffee to drink!

Some scientists predict that in thirty years, half of the world's coffee-growing areas will disappear. In the future, coffee may be hard to come by... Climate change, pests and diseases, desertification and the epidemic pose severe challenges to the global coffee planting industry. Promoting the sustainable development of the coffee industry is not only an ecological and environmental issue, but also a development issue. As the global climate warms, coffee trees will be forced to move to higher altitudes and latitudes, and unpredictable climate change and the disappearance of natural resources such as forests and water sources, as well as coffee diseases represented by leaf rust, make coffee planting more and more difficult.

The challenges facing the coffee industry not only affect the lives of 125 million people around the world who depend on coffee for their livelihoods, but also have a profound impact on the yield and quality of coffee. If we do nothing, coffee may disappear one day. How to cope with the challenges has become an urgent task for the global coffee industry. In the face of these problems, Starbucks ' solution is to work together with all like-minded partners around the world to bring a better future to coffee farmers. In 1998, it began to cooperate with the non-profit environmental organization Conservation International (CI) and formally defined the "ethical procurement method". In 2001, it worked with CI to develop a comprehensive set of guidelines - Fair Standards for Coffee and Farmers, changing the traditional practice of coffee farmers who depend on the weather for food and mood for farming. It requires coffee farmers to meet the standards in four aspects: product quality, economic responsibility, social responsibility, and environmental protection. After strict certification by a third-party organization, they can become its suppliers to ensure that the purchased coffee is ethically grown and responsibly purchased.

In May 2013, Starbucks bought the Alsacia Estate in Costa Rica. This is the only Starbucks -owned coffee estate in the world. The 240-hectare coffee estate is located at the foot of Poas Volcano, a well-known coffee-growing area in Costa Rica. It is not only a coffee plantation, but also a research center for global coffee agronomy. Its mission is to make coffee the world's first sustainable crop. In 2015, it continued to cooperate with Conservation International to jointly launch the "Sustainable Coffee Challenge" worldwide to promote the sustainable development of the entire coffee industry.

Currently, 165 partners around the world have joined the initiative, bringing together coffee producers, retailers, traders, roasters, importers, industry associations, governments, and other non-governmental organizations to jointly draw a blueprint for sustainable coffee. Under the "Sustainable Coffee Initiative", partners will continue to improve the sustainability of the coffee industry while protecting nature, and work together to "make coffee the world's first sustainably produced agricultural product."
