Many people believe that cold brewed coffee contains more antioxidants and less caffeine than hot brewed coffee, and therefore they think that cold brewed coffee is healthier. However, a new research report recently showed that scientific experiments have proven that the above perception is wrong. Hot brewed coffee contains more antioxidants than cold brew, and the caffeine content is not necessarily higher than cold brewed coffee.

Recently, a study published in Scientific Report proved that many previous concepts of cold brew coffee in the coffee or food industry were actually misunderstandings.

The study was conducted by analyzing hot and cold brewing of coffee from five origins, including Brazil, two varieties of Ethiopia, Colombia, Myanmar and Mexico.

There are four results:

First, the pH value (hot brew is slightly lower): the pH of the four hot brews is lower than that of cold brew;

Second, acidity (higher with hot brewing): hot brewing has more titratable acid than cold brewing;

The third is coffee chlorogenic acid (high in hot brew): After analysis, hot brewed coffee contains a high level of coffee chlorogenic acid;

Fourth, antioxidant capacity (hot brewed coffee has higher antioxidant capacity): After analysis, hot brewed coffee has significantly higher antioxidant capacity.

Among them, the third and fourth points can be said to subvert the general public's perception of cold brewed coffee. Therefore, hot brewed coffee contains more chlorogenic acid, which has many functional antioxidants and has a higher antioxidant capacity.

If caffeine is taken into consideration, another study shows that a cup (355ml) of cold brewed coffee contains about 207 mg of caffeine, while a cup of hot brewed coffee contains 142.5-495 mg of caffeine per cup, and a serving of espresso contains 75-225 mg of caffeine. The caffeine content of cold brewed coffee is just in the middle.

In fact, the caffeine content is closely related to the type of beans, origin, brewing method and machine model, and the variation is quite large. It cannot be said that cold brew coffee contains lower caffeine. In fact, many masters' statements about cold brew coffee are actually myths spread by word of mouth. Just listen to them and don't take them too seriously.
