Poor Indonesian families use cheap coffee instead of milk, and children drink 1.5 liters of coffee every day to stay active

According to a report by BUZZ World on September 17, Indonesian parents cannot afford milk and feed their babies with 1.5 liters of coffee every day.

It is reported that Hadijah, who was born in Polewali Mandar, started feeding her coffee instead of milk when she was six months old. She drank about 1.5 liters a day. According to the couple, their daughter had been drinking kopi tubruk coffee, a traditional cheap Indonesian coffee made from coarse coffee powder with sugar.

The couple said they had no choice, they could only earn 20,000 Indonesian rupiah (about 10 yuan) a day. This was barely enough for their daily expenses. The couple made a living by squeezing coconut dry in the coconut plantation, and sometimes even cut off the family's source of income.

In the interview, Anita said: "We have no choice. Our income cannot support the purchase of milk. We force her to drink coffee every day. If she does not drink coffee, she cannot sleep. She even throws a tantrum and asks for coffee before going to bed."

Anita also said that they knew it was unhealthy to give their children coffee, but they had no choice because sometimes they didn't even have money to buy necessities. But fortunately, Hadijah grew up quickly and had no physical problems. He was even a very active child who often played alone until late at night.

Hadijah's story went viral and staff from the Polewali Mandar health facility have visited the family. They brought milk and biscuits to Hadijah and advised her parents to stop giving her coffee as too much caffeine and sugar can be very harmful for a child.
