French Press Tips: How to Brew a Delicious Pot of Coffee

The French press is especially suitable for lazy people in the office. You don’t need to learn much to use it. Of course, it still takes skills to make good coffee.

The French press (hereinafter referred to as the French press), also known as the press pot or coffee plunger, was first invented in France in 1850. Of course, all inventions, such as cars and computers, were simple in form compared to today. The French press was no exception. At that time, it was not a tool specifically for brewing coffee. It was also a simple tool consisting of a glass or plastic container and a metal filter with a pressure rod. At that time, more people used the French press to brew black tea than coffee.

French press coffee is made by completely soaking the coffee in the pot, and then using a press rod with a metal filter to separate the coffee and coffee grounds. This brewing method produces a very mellow coffee, which can increase the texture and oil, and the final coffee is also quite clean.

So how should you use a French press?

First we need a French press! Also a grinder, thermometer, scale, timer, kettle and most importantly - coffee beans!

Steps: (Use Costa Rican Monsherry as an example to make two servings)

1. Weigh 20 grams of beans and grind them into the size of coarse sugar. The ratio of powder to water is 1:15.

2. Preheat the French press with water and then pour it out; pour the coffee powder into the French press.

3. Pour in 89-degree hot water and start timing. Stir gently after pouring the water to ensure that all the coffee powder is soaked.

4. After four minutes, slowly press the pressure rod down and pour it out.

Made with a French press, Costa Mont-Sheuri has some body, bright citric acid, and some grapefruit peel and melon seed flavors.

Precautions for using a French press

1. Grinding degree

When making coffee with a French press, the grinding degree should be adjusted to a coarser level. It is easy to over-extract coffee when making coffee with a French press. Generally, the particles should be slightly larger than those of edible white sugar. If the grinding degree is too fine, too much ultra-fine powder will pass through the metal filter, making the coffee taste less clean and affecting the taste.

2. Warming pot

Remember to warm the kettle with hot water before brewing. Because it is made of glass, the water temperature will drop quickly if you don’t warm the kettle first.

3. Coffee brewing ratio

The coffee brewing ratio is the ratio of coffee to water. The common brewing ratio ranges from 1:15 to 1:18. 1:15 means that 15 grams of coffee needs to be brewed with 225 grams of water. If you want to use a French press at home, you can adjust the brewing ratio according to your taste.

4. Pressure rod

After soaking, when pressing the rod down, be sure to do it at a constant speed and all the way to the bottom. If you pull it up and press it down repeatedly, the coffee powder will easily come out, resulting in slag.

The coffee brewed with a French press will have a rounder taste and consistency, and also add a rounder feeling. Therefore, many coffee lovers like to use a French press to brew dark roasted coffee to fully enjoy the sweetness and richness of dark roasted beans. Since the coffee extraction principle of the French press is soaking rather than filtering, there is no need to be too particular about the gestures and techniques of water injection. As long as the appropriate coffee powder and water ratio, water temperature and time are followed, it is not difficult to brew a pot of delicious coffee.
