How to choose and store coffee beans

How to choose and store coffee beans

1. When buying coffee beans, pay attention to the following issues:

First of all, you need to distinguish the quality of coffee bean shops. Pay attention to whether they store coffee beans carefully and whether the air in the shop is too hot or too humid.

The second way to distinguish the quality of coffee beans is to look at their appearance. First, check whether the size is uniform, whether there are defective beans such as black beans, and whether the color is uniform without spots.

Then smell the aroma to see if it is rich and mellow; finally, use your mouth to test whether it is fully baked and has a crisp and good taste.

In addition, coffee beans can be divided into new beans and old beans according to their storage time. The former refers to the newly harvested green beans of the year, and the latter refers to the old coffee beans harvested for more than one year. Since new beans have a strong acid taste and contain vegetable fats and other ingredients that are quite stable, new beans cannot produce a heavy roasted flavor. New beans need to be stored for many years before they can release their flavor.

2. How to take care of the coffee beans you bought home

Buy coffee beans and brew and grind them at home

Never buy ground coffee, as it will oxidize and lose its flavor too quickly. Wouldn’t that mean all the effort we put into selecting the coffee beans would be wasted?

Sealing of container

If you choose to store in a jar, be sure to use a completely airtight type.

What is more noteworthy is that coffee beans are packaged in aluminum foil composite layers. Because of the low air permeability, the speed at which food oxidizes and becomes damp is very, very low!)

3. How to store properly?

There are four major factors that affect the freshness of coffee beans: light, oxygen, temperature, and humidity.

1. It is not recommended to store it in the form of coffee powder

Many friends, especially those who are new to original coffee, buy coffee powder directly, and most of them cannot finish it at one time. In fact, this is very harmful to the flavor of coffee. Not to mention whether the coffee beans you buy are freshly roasted, even if they are just out of the oven, after being ground into powder, the contact surface with the air increases greatly, and oxidation is very fast. The freshness of the coffee will be lost immediately, and the original mellow flavor of the coffee will gradually disappear. The flavor of freshly roasted coffee beans will decline within two or three days after being ground into powder. Therefore, if you want to taste the real mellow coffee, it is recommended not to buy coffee powder directly, unless you consume it quickly within one or two days. Otherwise, buy coffee beans and a grinder, and grind the beans before brewing.

2. Use vacuum sealed container for storage

Extend the storage period and maximize the lasting flavor.

3. It is best to store at room temperature

Freshly roasted coffee beans can be stored at room temperature for two weeks. The changes in the taste of coffee during these two weeks are quite interesting. On the first day after roasting, its taste is not yet mature, and you will smell the aroma of grass. The charming sweet aroma of coffee beans is not strong enough, and you will feel that its taste is "stifled". In the next few days, the grassy smell will gradually decrease, while the sweet aroma will slowly increase. The sweet aroma reaches its peak on about the third day, and then slowly fades away. Overall, the personality of coffee beans will be very obvious and change very actively in the first few days. After about a week, its personality becomes gentle. Some people insist on tasting the personality of coffee in the first few days, while others like to taste its gentle side after leaving the coffee beans at room temperature for a week. In this way, the same bag of beans can experience its various changes. Feeling its changes every day not only adds some color to life, but also increases experience and is very helpful for the ability to judge the freshness of coffee beans.

4. How to store coffee beans at room temperature

Coffee beans need to be protected from strong light as much as possible, reduce contact with oxygen, and avoid high temperature and humidity.
