How to choose coffee beans? What are the characteristics of good coffee beans?

Some friends think that instant coffee has no coffee flavor at all, and the aroma of self-ground coffee is irreplaceable. The coffee you grind yourself has a very pure taste and is formulated according to your own taste. It is really delicious to drink a cup of it.

How to choose coffee beans? What are the characteristics of good coffee beans? Will lightly roasted coffee beans produce oil? The shelf life of coffee and the roasting date

Tips for choosing coffee beans <br /> Generally, the coffee beans we buy have already been roasted, so let’s roughly distinguish whether you buy a bag of coffee beans and whether the coffee beans are fresh and of good quality.

Look at the oil output

The amount of oil produced by coffee can be used to judge whether it is fresh or not. The more oil there is on the surface, the longer it has been stored and the more likely it is to be stale. However, this method of judgment is limited to medium-roasted coffee beans. The reasons are as follows:

Lightly roasted coffee beans do not produce much oil. Even after you have stored them for several months, you still cannot judge their freshness by the amount of oil produced.

For medium-roasted coffee beans, a little bit of oil will slowly begin to appear on the surface after about six or seven days. As the amount of oil on the surface increases until the entire surface is covered with oil, it means that they have been stored for at least more than a month and are no longer very fresh.

Heavy roasted beans will produce a lot of oil when they are first roasted, so it is impossible to judge heavy roasted beans by the amount of oil they produce.

Smell the aroma

When you get the coffee beans, you can smell its aroma first. If the coffee beans are roasted in time and are fresh, you can smell a faint floral and fruity aroma, or even the aroma of drupes. On the contrary, stale coffee beans will have a disgusting smell and a smell of oil because they have been stored for too long.

Coffee powder expands when exposed to water

Fresh coffee beans have some gas that is not expelled during roasting, so when you brew coffee, foam will appear on the surface when it meets hot water.

However, this also has something to do with whether the coffee beans are lightly roasted or darkly roasted.

Lightly roasted beans contain more water, so when they encounter hot water, they are less likely to absorb water, so less gas is emitted, and the foam that expands when water is poured on them is also smaller.

Dark roasted beans have less moisture, so they are easier to absorb water, emit more gas, and produce more and larger bubbles.

Picking beans by hand

Coffee that has been stored for a long time absorbs moisture, so the whole coffee bean will be softer, so it is easy to separate the coffee beans with your hands; but fresh beans have less moisture, so the texture is harder and not easy to split in half.

Pay attention to the shelf life and roasting date

Merchants will mark the roasting date and shelf life on the coffee bean packaging. Many shelf lives may be six months or a year. Please be careful not to store the beans close to the expiration date. The best tasting period of coffee beans is within one month, and the longest should not exceed three months to make a good cup of coffee.
