Love and Hate Moka Pot [User Guide]

Love and Hate Moka Pot [User Guide]

Making freshly ground coffee at home is undoubtedly one of the daily pleasures of every coffee lover.

French press, hand drip coffee maker, Aeropress, manual portable espresso machine, drip coffee, etc., these are all popular ways (tools) of making homemade coffee.

After experiencing Cool Kitchen all the way, I especially want to talk about the Moka pot.

Moka Pot and Café Mocha are two completely different things, they just have similar pronunciations and the same word is used when transliterating them.

Moka Pot

A moka pot is a tool used to extract espresso. It is commonly used in Europe and Latin American countries and is called an "Italian drip pot" in the United States.

The earliest Moka pot was made by Italian Alfonso Bialetti in 1933. His company Bialetti has been famous all over the world for producing coffee pots called "Moka Express".

The Moka pot is a coffee pot that makes people love and hate it.

The moka pot is not the most convenient, but it may be the most durable coffee pot; and using a moka pot to make coffee may be the personal way of making coffee that is least likely to be abandoned.

Love it,

  • Because it is efficient and fun, and as long as you control the amount of water and coffee powder, you can make delicious coffee with stable quality;
  • There are various ways to heat the pot, you can use an open flame or an electric stove. If it is a stainless steel moka pot, you can also use an induction cooker to heat it.
  • Simple structure, easy to clean;
  • Robust and durable, no need for daily consumables (such as filter paper).

Hate it,

  • Because if you are using it for the first time, it may take many attempts to master it and complete the operation smoothly.

There are many varieties of moka pots. In terms of production capacity, there are many options, ranging from 1 cup, 2 cups... to even 16 cups. There are also many designs in appearance and color. There are also moka pots that can make cappuccino.

This time I want to talk about the " double valve " moka pot. For me who prefers Italian coffee, only the double valve moka pot can make more concentrated coffee with crema.

*Crema , also called Italian coffee foam, is the dense foam on the surface of Italian espresso with a light brown-red color.

Perhaps you want to say that even a double-valve moka pot cannot produce as strong coffee as a manual portable espresso machine.

However, in my opinion, the process of making a moka pot is more interesting, less labor-intensive, more efficient, and less prone to aesthetic fatigue from a viewing perspective.

Equipment: Bialetti Double Valve Moka Pot Brikka (4 cups)

Usage Guidelines:

1. Pour cold water into the upper pot, not exceeding the scale line, and then pour the water into the lower pot.

* Note: The adjustable air pressure valve in the upper kettle should not be overtightened.

2. Place the powder box into the lower pot.

3. Weigh the coffee beans and grind them. (A 4-cup coffee pot uses about 20 grams of coffee powder at a time.)

*Note: The coffee powder must be ground to the coarseness used for making espresso.

4. After filling the powder box with coffee powder, spread it flat with your hands.

*Note: Pressing operation is required.

5. Align the upper and lower pots and tighten them. It is best to hold the pot body when tightening it, rather than using the handle to avoid damaging the handle.

*Special Notes:

You need to be especially careful when tightening the connection. If it is not tight enough, it will cause air and water leakage at the edges of the upper and lower pots during the coffee making process, forcing the heating to stop and interrupt the coffee making process. Cool Kitchen has had coffee making interrupted many times because of this.

As the "originator" brand of moka pots, Bilodi's interface design is a bit backward. Every time you use it, you need to use brute force to tighten the interface, which is really inhumane.

6. Wait for the coffee liquid to gradually flow into the upper pot.

7. The amount of liquid that comes out gradually decreases, and more and more bubbles begin to emerge.

8. When the bubbling sound starts to get louder, immediately pick up the kettle, move away from the heat source, and turn off the heat.

9. Wait for a while, and when there is basically no liquid flowing out, cool the pot body. You can directly rinse the lower pot with cold water, or place the lower pot in a basin of cold water and let it stand for a while.

10. Add milk and other ingredients according to your personal preference and you can enjoy delicious coffee immediately!

The entire process, from grinding the beans to completion, takes about 10 minutes. If you want it to be faster, you can buy coffee powder directly and add hot water to the pot at the beginning.

*Note: If the water is too hot, it will be inconvenient to hold the kettle to tighten it. It is best to wrap the kettle with a towel to avoid scalding your hands.

Summary: The key to making coffee with a double valve moka pot

  • Water filling should be done according to the scale and not too much;
  • Grind the coffee to the fineness required for espresso;
  • Fill the powder box with coffee powder, spread it flat, and press it tightly;
  • When tightening the upper and lower pots, make sure they are tight enough.

Well, now you can use the moka pot to make and enjoy a cup of delicious coffee yourself! ^_^
