Is coffee grounds made from coffee beans?

Is the source of coffee powder the coffee beans on the Starbucks price list?

Coffee powder is one of the most common drinks in our daily life. It is made from ground coffee beans. In this article, we will explore the origin of coffee powder and some knowledge related to it.

1. What are coffee beans?

First, let's understand what coffee beans are. Coffee beans are actually seeds extracted from certain plants belonging to what scientists call the family Cauliflower. These plants are usually grown in regions such as Asia, Africa, and Latin America.

2. Coffee trees and berries

To understand how we get ground coffee, we need to understand the whole process. First, it is very important to plant and cultivate healthy and thriving curry trees (Coffea) in suitable climatic conditions.

Coffea arabica and Coffea canephora are the two most common coffee plant species. They grow in different regions and have different taste and flavor characteristics.

When the coffee tree grows to a certain size, it will bloom and bear fruit. These fruits are often called coffee cherries because they are bright red or yellow in appearance and resemble cherries in shape.

3. Extraction and processing of coffee beans

Once the coffee cherries are ripe, farmers harvest them and begin extracting the seeds – known as curry beans . This process can be done in a variety of ways:

  • Dry method: The whole ripe curry cherry is dried in the sun until the pulp is completely dry. The outer pulp is then removed by machine, leaving two curry beans wrapped in a hard shell inside.
  • Wet method: Ripe coffee is cut crosswise to remove the outer pulp, and the remaining seeds are fermented in water. The fermentation process removes the mucilage on the surface of the seeds and makes them easier to clean and dry.

Regardless of the method used, the final product is curry beans, which usually need to go through a series of processing steps, such as removing residual pulp and screening out defective products.

4. Preparation of coffee powder

Once the curry beans have been extracted and processed, they are ready to be made into ground coffee. This process generally involves the following steps:

  1. Roasting: Place the curry beans in a roaster and heat them at high temperatures. Different degrees of roasting will produce coffee powder with different tastes and flavor characteristics.
  2. Cooling: After roasting, the curry beans need to be cooled to prevent further heating.
  3. Packaging and Portioning: The final step is to grind the cooled and flavoured curry beans into powder and pack and portion them.

In the end, we have bags of coffee grounds that can be used to brew a cup of fragrant coffee.

5. The impact of coffee bean types on the taste of coffee powder

Different types and varieties of curry trees, as well as different degrees of roasting, will affect the final curry powder. For example, Arabica varieties are generally lower in acidity, milder in taste and more aromatic, while Robusta is stronger, more bitter and has a higher acidity.

Additionally, light roasting will retain more of the original flavor characteristics, while dark roasting will produce a stronger, bitter flavor with a noticeable burnt aroma when drinking.

in conclusion

From the above introduction, we can conclude that yes, curry beans are one of the ingredients needed to make coffee powder . From cultivating healthy and lush curry trees to harvesting, extracting and processing curry beans, to the final roasting and grinding process, every step has an impact on the final coffee powder.

Therefore, when we taste a cup of fragrant and delicious coffee, we can not only enjoy the pleasant feeling it brings, but also imagine the long and complicated production process behind it.
