Coffee Science Post | Americano, Latte, Mocha, Cappuccino, Macchiato…what’s the difference?

As one of the three major beverages in the world (cocoa, coffee, and tea), coffee is widely loved by people.

Whether you are a student or an office worker, how can you devote yourself to work and study without a cup of coffee in every busy and sleepy morning or at night when you need to stay up late to work overtime?

But there are many types of coffee: Americano, latte, mocha, cappuccino, macchiato, cappuccino... Every time I order one, I don't know the difference, for fear of exposing my ignorance.

Today, the "Science Bean" is online! I don't believe you still don't understand the difference between each type of coffee after reading it.

Espresso

This can be said to be a classic in every coffee shop, and it is also the basis of other fancy coffees. Generally speaking, espresso is a very small cup, about 30 ml, bitter, with a thick layer of coffee oil floating on the surface. In Italian, espresso means "freshly brewed for you". Concentrated coffee is also called freshly ground coffee, and its process is to extract it quickly in a short time.

Americano

American coffee is actually espresso mixed with half a cup of boiled water. The ratio of water to coffee is usually 2:1. Of course, many coffee shops now use drip coffee pots for brewing.

Latte

Latte is a classic combination of espresso and milk, with the ratio of milk to coffee generally controlled at 1.5:1. Some milk foam is added to the top of the coffee, and a good barista can also present you with beautiful latte art.

Cappuccino

It is easy to confuse with latte. The difference between the two is the ratio of milk to milk foam. Cappuccino has more milk foam than milk. Compared with milk, the texture of milk foam is finer and denser, which makes cappuccino taste sweeter and mellower.

Cafe Mocha

Mocha is a coffee with a more complicated recipe. In addition to espresso and milk, chocolate sauce and whipped cream are also added. The combination of different types and sharing of syrups and chocolate sauces has brought more variations to Mocha coffee, such as Caramel Mocha (caramel sauce), Zebra Mocha (chocolate sauce and white chocolate sauce), etc.

Macchiato

Macchiato means "mark" in Italian. Compared with latte, macchiato uses a smaller coffee cup and only adds a layer of milk foam on the surface of the coffee without adding milk. When you drink it, the milk aroma only stays on the lips, and the taste of the coffee is not diluted by milk.

Espresso with Panna

The combination of espresso and fresh cream is also relatively simple.

Flat White

1 part of espresso plus 1.5 parts of hot milk. However, this white coffee is not the Malaysian white coffee, which is made by low-temperature roasting.

Many people’s first contact with coffee is with Italian coffee, which is a more common type of coffee that is extracted in a short time. Mocha, latte, macchiato… are all different forms of Italian coffee.

However, these are just the tip of the iceberg in the world of coffee. There are many different types depending on the origin of the coffee beans, the coffee roasting and the production process.

In today's society, coffee is no longer a drink, but a culture, something pure and rigorous. Sitting in a cafe is also about enjoying a mood and savour a life.

Friends who love coffee can also buy their own coffee machines and use a variety of coffee beans to make any type of coffee they want, choosing their favorite concentration, amount of milk and sweetness.
