Coffee trivia: Coffee is delivered to our doorsteps, but how many people still don’t know how to identify coffee beans?

If you make coffee at home, buying good coffee beans is the key to enjoying good coffee. Now more and more coffee lovers have purchased coffee utensils at home or in the workplace. Presumably, all they need is coffee beans that satisfy them. But faced with various coffee beans on the market, how do you tell the quality of them?

Identify coffee beans from their appearance

1. Determine whether it is a single origin coffee bean

To judge whether the boss is using mixed beans as single-origin beans, first of all, at first glance, there are almost no flaws or beans that are too large or too small. Then grab a handful of coffee beans in your hand. Each bean is uniform in size, color, and shape. Such beans are usually single-variety coffee beans. If it is a mixed coffee bean, because it is a mixture of beans of different varieties, it will have different shapes, sizes, and colors.

2. Choose coffee beans based on color

Coffee beans can release their aroma only after being roasted. There are different roasting times, namely dark roasting, medium roasting and light roasting. The darker the roasting, the stronger the coffee will be. The color of the coffee beans also gets darker from light to dark roasting. Therefore, friends who like to drink stronger or lighter coffee can choose the coffee beans they want according to the color of the coffee beans.

3. Judging the freshness of coffee beans from their surface condition

Usually, lightly roasted coffee beans will not produce oil after roasting, and the surface is very clean. However, if the surface of lightly roasted coffee beans is covered with oil, it means that the beans have been roasted for a long time and are no longer fresh. Medium roasted coffee beans have some oil after roasting because they are roasted for a long time. If there is no oil on the surface of medium roasted coffee beans, it means that such coffee beans are no longer fresh.

Judging the freshness of coffee beans by their aroma

You can also tell whether the coffee beans are fresh by the smell they emit. The aroma of the coffee beans begins to dissipate gradually from the time they are roasted. Over time, the aroma will become weaker and weaker and gradually disappear, and may even produce a musty smell or other bad smells, but not the aroma of coffee.

Shell a bean

1. Peel the coffee beans to determine whether the roasting is uniform

After peeling the evenly roasted coffee, the color inside is basically the same as the color outside. If the color inside is lighter than the color outside, it means that the roasting is uneven, the fire is too high or not enough, and the flavor of the unevenly roasted coffee beans will naturally be affected.

2. Judge the freshness of coffee beans by their crispness

Usually when coffee beans are fresh, they are very crisp and easy to peel with a crisp sound. On the contrary, coffee beans that have been stored for a long time become tough and are not easy to peel.

Fresh coffee tastes great when chewed

Many friends like to chew two coffee beans when they buy them. This is also a very effective way to judge whether the coffee beans are fresh. Fresh coffee beans have a crisp taste and a crisp sound, followed by a mouthful of fragrance. Such beans should not taste bad. Stale or damp coffee beans are not so crisp and have other bad flavors.

If you come across coffee beans again, you can try the above method to feel whether the coffee beans you see are of high quality or whether they are fresh.
