Why can’t coffee beans be brewed directly?

Coffee is a must-have drink for many people every morning, and making a delicious cup of coffee requires a series of steps. One of the important steps is to soak the coffee beans. However, why can't we just put the coffee beans into water to soak? This article will answer this question from several aspects.

1. Coffee beans need to be ground

First, coffee beans need to be ground before brewing. Grinding is the process of breaking whole coffee beans into powder or particles, which increases the surface area and allows water to better contact with them. If we use whole coffee beans directly for brewing, water cannot fully extract the aroma and taste due to the small surface area.

2. Hot water can extract substances better

Secondly, using hot water during the brewing process can better extract the substances contained in the coffee. When we pour boiling water on the ground coffee beans, the temperature of the water will dissolve the chemicals in the coffee. These substances include caffeine, acidic components and aroma substances. If we brew directly with cold water, it is difficult to fully extract these substances because the temperature is not high enough.

3. Coffee beans need to expand

In addition, during the brewing process, the coffee beans also expand. When the hot water comes into contact with the coffee powder, the gas in it begins to be released and makes the particles expand. This process is called "fluffing". In this way, the gaps between the particles can be increased and the water can flow better through the coffee layer. If we brew directly with whole coffee beans, this effect cannot be achieved.

4. French Press and Clematis

Finally, it is worth mentioning that the traditional brewing method uses tools such as French press and drip pot. When using a French press, first put the ground coffee beans into the pot, then add hot water, and after a while, use a pressure rod to press the coffee grounds to the bottom of the pot. The drip pot brews by letting hot water slowly flow through the coffee powder. These tools require the use of ground coffee powder, and cannot directly use whole coffee beans.

To sum up, in order to make delicious coffee, we can't just put the whole coffee beans into water and brew them. First, they need to be ground to increase the surface area; second, high-temperature water is needed to extract the substances; and factors such as the fluffing effect and the brewing tools must also be considered. Only after these steps can we taste a cup of good coffee with a rich and mellow aroma.
