Five authoritative organizations jointly released the "Scientific Consensus on Coffee and Health"

Healthy adults can drink 3 to 5 cups of coffee a day.

Coffee is one of the most popular beverages in the world. Statistics show that the average person in Japan and South Korea drinks 200 cups of coffee per year, the average person in the United States drinks 400 cups, and the average person in Europe drinks 750 cups. In China, the number of people drinking coffee is also growing rapidly, and there are countless coffee lovers.

However, there have always been different opinions about the effects of drinking coffee on physical health. Now five major authoritative organizations have answered questions that people are generally concerned about.

1

What is the reasonable drinking frequency and amount?

Healthy adults

3 to 5 cups a day According to the recommendations of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Food Safety Authority, the Canadian Ministry of Health, the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Agency and other agencies, healthy adults can consume no more than 210 to 400 mg of caffeine per day (equivalent to 3 to 5 cups of coffee).

♣ Pregnant women

It is not recommended to drink coffee. Although the Canadian Ministry of Health, the American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists, the American Pregnancy and Childbirth Association and other organizations believe that a small amount of coffee can be consumed during pregnancy (no more than 150-300 mg of caffeine per day, about two cups), pregnant women are not encouraged to drink coffee.

Children and adolescents

Control caffeine intake The American Academy of Pediatrics does not recommend that children and adolescents drink coffee. The U.S. Food and Drug Administration, the European Food Safety Authority, Health Canada, the Australian New Zealand Food Standards Agency and other agencies believe that children and adolescents should not consume more than 2.5 to 3 mg of caffeine per kilogram of body weight per day.

2

Is it carcinogenic?

In 2017, the World Cancer Research Fund (WRCF) released a report stating that there is currently no evidence that drinking coffee causes cancer. At the same time, there is some evidence that coffee can reduce the risk of certain cancers, such as breast cancer, endometrial cancer, and liver cancer.

3

Does it increase the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular disease in healthy adults?

The American Heart Association, the European Society of Cardiology, the Australian National Health and Medical Research Institute and other organizations believe that moderate coffee drinking (1 to 2 cups a day) by healthy adults does not increase the risk of heart disease and cardiovascular disease.

However, it should be noted that some people who are sensitive to caffeine may experience discomfort such as accelerated heartbeat, nausea, dizziness, etc., similar to the phenomenon of "tea drunkenness". Consumers are advised to adjust the frequency and amount of drinking according to their own conditions.

4

Does it increase the risk of diabetes?

The Chinese Nutrition Society's "Food and Health - Scientific Evidence Consensus" points out that moderate coffee drinking (3 to 4 cups a day) may reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

The International Diabetes Federation, the American Diabetes Association and other organizations believe that diabetic patients can drink coffee in moderation, but at the same time they should pay attention to controlling the intake of added sugar.

5

Does it increase the risk of osteoporosis?

Healthy adults can drink coffee in moderation, but too much caffeine will increase the risk of osteoporosis. China's "Guidelines for the Diagnosis and Treatment of Primary Osteoporosis (2017 Edition)" suggests that drinking a lot of coffee and tea will affect calcium absorption and increase the risk of osteoporosis. The International Osteoporosis Association and the National Osteoporosis Association of the United States believe that it is best to control coffee intake to less than 3 cups per day.

6

Does it affect sleep?

Caffeine has a certain central nervous system stimulant effect, so both coffee and tea can refresh the mind. The human body's response to caffeine varies greatly from person to person, and it may affect sleep for sensitive people. It is recommended to control the frequency and amount of coffee drinking according to your own situation.
